The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come under fire from the Congress party after a video of a man urinating on a tribal in Madhya Pradesh went viral on social media.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Wednesday said that atrocities against tribals were rising under the BJP’s rule and the “inhuman” crime shows the “real character of BJP’s hatred towards tribals and Dalits”.

“Atrocities on tribal brothers and sisters are rising under the BJP’s rule. The entire humanity has been put to shame by the inhuman crime of a BJP leader in Madhya Pradesh. This is the disgusting face and real character of BJP’s hatred towards tribals and Dalits,” Gandhi tweeted.

The police on Tuesday arrested the accused, Pravesh Shukla, and invoked the National Security Act (NSA) against him.

The Congress has alleged the accused is an associate of Sidhi BJP MLA Kedarnath Shukla. When contacted, the MLA’s spokesperson told The Indian Express, “This man is not a representative of the MLA. He is not even a BJP member.”

Congress MP chief Kamal Nath said the incident was an “insult” to the tribal community. Hitting out at the BJP, Nath added, “Has the intoxication of power hit the leaders of the BJP to such an extent that they are not considering human beings as human beings?”

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) party chief Mayawati called the incident “very shameful” and “inhuman”. “Instead of trying to save the criminal and claiming he doesn’t belong to the party, the BJP government of Madhya Pradesh should take action against that criminal not only by NSA but by confiscating/demolishing his property,” she said.

Meanwhile, state home minister Narottam said the accused was arrested late night and strict action has been taken against him. “The NSA was invoked following the directions of the CM,” he said.
