Fireman who saved stranded dog, man behind heritage centre among 27 awardees on I-Day

From a fireman who saved the life of a stranded dog during the floods that wreaked havoc in Chandigarh last month to a Group Captain who helped set up the first Air Force Heritage Museum, the Union Territory (UT) administration will be giving awards to 27 people on Independence Day on Tuesday.

Sandeep Kumar, who has been recently appointed by the the Fire and Rescue Services at the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and is posted at the Sector 11 fire station, on July 10 displayed exceptional bravery while fearlessly entering a flooded-water stream at Khuda Lahora village to save a dog.

“His courageous actions led to the successful rescue of a stranded dog. Sandeep’s remarkable efforts reflected his commitment to safeguarding lives, both human and animal, even in times of adversity and proved the motto of the fire department, that is, ‘We Serve to Save’,” Municipal Commissioner Anindita Mitra said.

Group Captain Paramjeet Singh, VSM, Air HQ, who helped set up the country’s first Indian Air Force Heritage Museum in Sector 18, is also among the awardees. It was Singh who had mooted the concept and idea of the heritage centre with the Chandigarh administration.

For coordinating the air show, Colonel Jagdeep Sandhu, advisor-cum-principal director of Civil Military Affairs, Headquarters, Western Command, Chandimandir will be awarded in the field of public service.

Dr Ravneet Kaur, professor and head of department of transfusion medicine at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32; Jaswinder Bakshi, senior nursing officer, GMSH 16 Chandigarh; Arun Kumar, principal of Government Industrial Training Institute, Sector 28C; Kavita Guleria, fine art TGT at Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 28 D; and Ashwani Dogra, finance and planning officer, Chandigarh administration secretariat, will be awarded for their meritorious services.

Devender and Parul, senior assistants in the Chandigarh administration secretariat; Rajinder Singh, district attorney, legal remembrancer and prosecution UT; Chander Shekhar, junior assistant in the office of deputy commissioner; Sangeeta Sahni, senior assistant in the estate office; Rachpal Kaur, head draftsman at Chief Architect; and Shiv Kumar, senior scale stenographer in the engineering department will all be awarded for their meritorious services in their respective fields.

Excise and Taxation Officer Nripjit Kaur; Davinder Singh, section leader, Home Guards; Vivek Thakur, judo coach in the sports department; and Chief Accounts Officer Vrinder Singh Thakur are among the other awardees. Manish Gupta, a resident of Sector 38, will also get an award in the miscellaneous category.

Satyender, the GM CTU is also being awarded. Applauding Satyendar, Director Transport Pradyuman Singh said that “as GM depot 1, the traffic receipt has increased tremendously and also as GM Traffic several new and successful routes have started during his stint.”

While Professor Namita Gupta, a resident of Sector 19, and Anamika Walia, a resident of Sector 46, will be awarded in the field of social service, Aviral Agarwal, a student of Strawberry Fields High School from Sector 26, will be awarded in the field of arts and culture.

Aviral has probed the history of coins belonging to different eras, and his school’s director Atul Khanna praised him, saying that in his 12-year association with the school, the student grew “into a contemplative and responsible young adult”. “His keen interest in reading, learning languages and history led him to first acquire the finer nuances of the Urdu language during the long months of pandemic-induced lockdown and subsequently a fascination for probing the history of coins belonging to different eras. The Chandigarh Adminstration’s honour is well-deserved indeed,” Khanna added.

Kashvee Gautam from Guru Gobind Singh College for Women and Reet Kapoor from the department of physical education, Panjab University, Chandigarh, will be awarded in the field of sports.
