Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday slammed the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for allegedly using “terror and violence” to win the recent panchayat election in West Bengal.
Virtually addressing the Kshetriya Panchayati Raj Parishad in Bengal, PM Modi charged, “TMC ne khooni khel khela hai (TMC has played with blood),” referring to the violence and mayhem that marred the rural polls in the TMC-ruled Bengal last month.
“In Bengal, violence has been used as a means to threaten the Opposition. But despite this, love of the people of Bengal has led to the people’s victory. But when our candidates have won, they are not allowed to take out a procession. If some take out a procession, they are attacked. This is TMC’s politics,” Modi charged.
The PM also said, “They (TMC) do anything required to ensure that no BJP candidate can file nomination. They not only threatened BJP workers but also the voters. Contracts are given out to capture the booths. This is their way of doing politics in the state. During the counting of the votes, the TMC forced BJP members out of office and did not let them even watch. When BJP won despite all this, they took out rallies against our members.”
The PM also attacked the Opposition parties for walking out from the Lok Sabha during the no-confidence motion, saying his government has defeated the “negativity being spread” by them across the country. “Only two days back, we had defeated the Opposition’s no-confidence motion in Parliament. We had also defeated the negativity that is being spread by them. The Opposition parties didn’t want voting as it would have exposed the cracks in their alliance. They ran away from the House,” he said.
The no-confidence motion against the Modi government was defeated through a voice vote in the Lower House after the Opposition MPs staged a walk-out.
Modi also charged that the Opposition “didn’t want a discussion” on the Manipur situation. “They were not serious about any discussion, they just wanted to do politics over it,” he added.
Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee strongly reacted to the PM’s allegations, charging that he was speaking “without evidence”. She also raked up the Manipur violence and alleged sexual atrocities against women wrestlers by BJP MP and outgoing Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh to hit back.
“He (PM Modi) is speaking without evidence. He wants poor people to die, the country to die and common people to suffer. One cannot raise issues such as corruption, PM Care fund, Rafale agreement, attempts to sell PSUs, demonetisation. You can fool some of the people some of the time but not all the people all the time,” Banerjee alleged.
The CM also alleged: “You (PM) don’t take action against your people who are corrupt and involved in character assassination, atrocities on women, atrocities on wrestlers and atrocities in Manipur. Your people also killed so many people in Bengal. Instead of giving political wind to them, you must behave properly.”
