An alleged drug smuggler was killed in an encounter near Kairon village in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, police said on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Jora Singh Waseer. The police also arrested his accomplice, identified as Kuldeep Singh. Both are residents of Kot Isse Khan in Moga.
Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted a vehicle at a checkpoint between Patti and Kairon villages but its occupant tried to flee. They also opened fire at a police team, which retaliated, leading to Jora Singh’s death, police said. Police sources said they had specific information that some people were smuggling heroin from Pakistan. So, a heavy police force was deployed at the checkpoint to nab them. However, police has yet to make a statement if any drug was recovered from both.
Meanwhile, two versions have emerged on the encounter.
According to police sources, Jora Singh sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot. Kuldeep Singh managed to run away on foot and was later arrested from Tarn Taran bus stand.
However, sources at hospital claimed that Kuldeep Singh had managed to escape briefly with the car and injured Jora Singh and admitted the latter to Tarn Taran government hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.
Jora Singh had a previous case registered against him under the Excise Act in 2017 for liquor smuggling. Kuldeep Singh had a case registered under the NDPS Act for possession of 5 kg of opium. Both were out on bail.
